How to Help Dogs With Demodex Mites

Demodex mites are small parasites that cause a form of mange on dogs. Demodectic mange is the generalized form and quite common. The mites infect your dog̵7;s entire body, causing skin infections, bald spots, scaly skin, and in extreme cases, lesions. If you suspect your dog has demodex mites, take him to your vet immediately. Following treatment, there are things you can do at home to help your dog.

Things You'll Need

  • Antibiotics
  • Amitraz dip
  • Gloves
  • Old clothing
  • Benzoyl peroxide shampoos
  • Sponge
  • Dandruff shampoo
  • Cortisone cream
  • Witch hazel
  • Dog food
  • Flea treatment
  • Flea spray
  • Ear cleaner

Instructions

    • 1

Give your dog all prescribed medications. Your vet will likely prescribe an antibiotic to treat the mange infections. Lvermectin, a common medication, is dangerous for certain breeds of dogs. Never administer any medication to your dog unless it's prescribed.

Bathe and dip your dog. Your vet will likely recommend an amitraz dip to help kill the mites. Wear old clothes and gloves for all bathing and dips to protect your skin and jewelry. Before treating your dog, bathe her with a benzoyl peroxide shampoo that can be purchased online or in drug stores. This will help treat the skin infections and make the amitraz dip more effective. Wash your dog in the peroxide and allow it to remain on her skin for 10 minutes before rinsing. Dip a sponge in the amitraz dip and dab it onto the bald spots on your dog's skin. Do not rinse it off. Dip your dog once every two weeks for a maximum of 14 applications.

Help your dog fight the itching caused by dry, scaly skin. Use a dandruff shampoo once a week or apply a cortisone cream or witch hazel to infected spots.

    • 4

Boost your dog̵7;s immune system so that he can fight the current infestation and prevent future outbreaks. Mites will lower your dog̵7;s immune system and make him more susceptible to other diseases. Feed your dog high quality food and make sure his vaccinations are current.

Protect against other parasites such as fleas and ear mites. Administer a topical flea treatment and make sure your home is clean. Clean your dog̵7;s ears regularly with a solution available at pet stores.
