A seizure is uncontrolled electrical activity in the brain that can cause convulsions. Neurotransmitters are not in the correct chemical alignment when a seizure occurs. A seizure can involve a malfunction in the animal's sensory or muscle functions. In addition to being an inherited condition, called epilepsy, there are multiple different causes of seizures in animals.
-
Environmental toxins
-
Many household products cause seizures in animals. One such toxin is called organochlorines, which can be found in many flea powders.
Lyme disease
-
If an animal is bitten by a tick, it can be infected with Lyme disease. Lyme disease affects the central nervous system, which can result in seizures.
Hypoglycemia
-
An animal with hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, can have a seizure when its glucose levels are low. This can happen when the animal goes too long without eating.
Liver disease
-
When there is excess ammonia in the blood from liver disease or hepatic encephalopathy, a seizure can occur.
Brain Tumor
-
A brain tumor, which creates pressure on the brain, can result in a seizure.
