Some dogs like to wolf down (pun intended) every meal like it is their last. They gulp their entire bowl of kibble down in less than a minute. These eating habits could cause the dog to choke or suffer from bloat. Bloat is a serious condition that causes gases to get trapped in the dog's stomach. The stomach will start to swell and it can quickly kill your dog. If your dog eats too fast, try a few simple tips.
Instructions
Sit with your dog and monitor his eating, if you have time. Give your dog his kibble by hand or offer a few pieces of kibble, or tablespoons of canned food. If you do not have time to hand-feed your dog, try using one of the toys that have dogs trying each little nook and cranny to get to the kibble.
Feed your dog smaller but more frequent meals through out the day. Instead of feeding three bulky meals, feed five smaller ones. This may take some patience and tolerance on your part but in time it will become your dog's new routine.
Place a large rock in the center of his bowl. This will cause the dog to have to eat around the big rock. Some dog foods offered in retail pet supply stores have a big bump in the middle to act in the same manner as a rock. Others have three pegs molded into the bowl to force the dog to eat more slowly.
Use a muffin tin as a dog dish. Fill the holes up with the dog food. This makes the dog have to maneuver his way into each individual hole. This may not work as well as a specially made dog food bowl, but it will slow your dog down.
