Many eye problems in pets can be a sign of underlying disease or illness. Runny or cloudy eyes with a green discharge or "blue-white hue" may be indicators of infection or cataracts, according to Mary L. Wulff-Tilford and Gregory L. Tilford, authors of "Herbs for Pets." For the treatment of a simple infection, a basic homeopathic eye wash can solve the problem, the authors advise. However, if symptoms persist or are combined with others like visual impairment and fever, consult with a veterinarian trained in classical homeopathy.

Homeopathic Eye Wash
-
A homeopathic eye wash using the expressed juice of the plant eyebright (Euphrasia officinalis) is very effective in treating eye infections that produce green discharge. Eyebright has antiseptic, astringent and anti-inflammatory properties. To make the eyewash, use a homeopathic extract of eyebright (as a tincture or glycerine-based formula). Put 5 drops of the extract in 1 cup of pure water. Add 1/4 tsp. of sea salt. Mix well and store at room temperature in a clean dropper bottle. Put 2 to 3 drops in the affected eye three times daily
Monkshood
-
One to two pellets of homeopathic Aconitum napellus (monkshood) 30C given every four hours can alleviate eye discharge, pain and inflammation; this treatment also works well at the first sign of infection, says Dr. Richard Pitcairn, author of "Natural Health for Dogs & Cats." Use folded paper to pour the remedy directly into your dog's mouth or throat--do not touch the remedy with your fingers or hands.
Crush the pellets if putting them into your dog's mouth is too difficult. Place pellets inside the fold of paper and crush them with a spoon or the flat side of a knife. Discontinue monkshood after three treatments.
