Inexpensive Antibiotics for Dogs

Several dozen antibiotic medicines are available for use in dogs. Each requires a prescription. Eighteen of these medicines are prescribed regularly. Six of them are inexpensive to buy ($.40 per pill or less) if ordered through an online pet pharmacy. Here are those six antibiotics.

  1. Tetracycline

    • Tetracycline is the least expensive antibiotic available for dogs. It treats a broad range of bacteria and infections.

    Azulfidine

    • Azulfidine is used to treat colitis. It also is available under the name Sulfasalazine.

    Metronidazole

    • Metronidazole, also called Flagyl, is prescribed for infections. It also acts as an anti-inflammatory.

    Doxycycline

    • Doxycycline is a member of the Tetracycline family, but was developed to be deeper-penetrating and longer-lasting. It is also sold under the name Vibramycin.

    Keflex

    • Keflex is used for common infections. It is the brand name for Cephalexin.

    Amoxicillin

    • Amoxicillin was originally developed as an improvement upon Penicillin, in that it lasts longer and does not degrade as quickly from stomach acid. It is prescribed for a wide range of conditions.
