Poisonous Plants & Herbs for Dogs

Dogs are naturally curious animals and spend a lot of their time sniffing and tasting anything that crosses their paths including your indoor and outdoor greenery. Ingesting the wrong plant or herb can be dangerous or even fatal for your dog.

  1. Indoor Plants

    • Ferns, philodendrons and English ivy plants as well as the peace lily are poisonous to your dog if it eats them.

    Outdoor Dangers

    • Daffodil and tulip bulbs can cause your dog harm if eaten. Foxglove and bleeding heart plants as well as hydrangea will make your dog sick if ingested.

    Holiday Greenery

    • Mistletoe and holly have poisonous berries and are dangerous if large amounts are consumed. Poinsettias have bad side effects if eaten by your dog.

    Herbs

    • Chamomile, alfalfa, comfry, penny royal and garlic are dangerous herbs for dogs to eat.

    Symptoms

    • Vomiting and diarrhea are the usual signs of poisoning in dogs. It may also have a rapid heartbeat, breathing issues and oral irritation.

    Treatment

    • Call your vet immediately if you think that you're dog has eaten a poisonous plant or herb especially if it's exhibiting abnormal behavior such as vomiting, staggering or confusion. Take a sample of the plant or herb with you to the vet.
