Travatan and Xalatan are prescription eye drop medications that treat uncomfortable eye pressure when over-the-counter eye drops aren't effective enough to cure the problem.
-
Identification
-
The generic name for Travatan is travoprost ophthalmic, and the generic name for Xalatan is latanoprost ophthalmic. Travatan is a prostaglandin analog, and both are available only by prescription.
Function
-
Travatan and Xalatan are used to treat eye diseases such as open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension by relieving pressure and draining excess fluid.
Use
-
Small amounts of Travatan or Xalatan are dropped into the eyes with the head tilted back. The eyes are then closed for about a minute, and gentle pressure is applied to the corner of the eyes to keep the medication from seeping into the tear ducts.
Precautions
-
Using Travatan for a long time might cause eyes, eyelashes or eyelids to change color. People should wait at least 15 minutes after using Xalatan drops before reinserting contact lenses.
Side Effects
-
Travatan and Xalatan might cause side effects such as mild discomfort or pain in the eyes; blurry, dry, burning, stinging, red, itchy, swollen or watery eyes; or a feeling there's something in the eye.
