The Difference Between Frontline & Frontline Plus

Fleas and ticks can be troublesome problems for pets, and left untreated, can lead to serious illnesses. Merial, a pet pharmaceutical company, makes both basic Frontline (Top Spot) and Frontline Plus. Both control fleas and ticks, while Frontline Plus adds an extra ingredient to control flea eggs and larvae.

  1. What is Frontline?

    • Frontline products (Frontline Top Spot and Frontline Plus) are flea and tick control medications. Using the active ingredient fipronil, Frontline products begin to kill fleas within 12 hours and ticks within 48 hours and provide a minimum of one month of protection.

    What is Frontline Plus?

    • Frontline Plus combines adult flea and tick control with additional medication, an insect growth regulator known as S-methoprene, which kills flea eggs and larvae. This additional medication interrupts the life cycle of the flea, preventing the larvae from developing into adults and reproducing.

Similarities Between Frontline and Frontline Plus

    • Ticks can cause Lyme disease, a serious illness for pets.

Both Frontline Top Spot and Frontline Plus control flea infestations on dogs and cats. Both are applied topically to pets. Both are available without a prescription from a veterinarian.

Differences Between Frontline and Frontline Plus

    • Frontline Plus kills flea eggs and larvae, while basic Frontline Top Spot does not. Frontline Plus provides more complete and reliable flea and tick protection than Frontline Top Spot.

    Which Should I Choose?

    • Pets who go outside should receive Frontline Plus for more extensive flea and tick control.

For indoor cats, Frontline Plus may not be necessary. However, for dogs and outdoor cats, Frontline Plus provides maximum protection against both fleas and ticks.
