Acid Reflux Medication for Dogs

Many dogs suffer from acid reflux. There are over-the-counter medications available that may help reduce the symptoms in your dog. Always check with your veterinarian before giving your dog any medication.

  1. Identification

    • When your dog suffers from acid reflux, he may have a stomach ache or develop ulcers from the condition.

    Cimetidine

    • Cimetidine is an OTC medicine that can be given to dogs to help relieve the symptoms of acid reflux. It is best to discuss the exact dosage with your vet.

    Bismuth Subsalicylate

    • Bismuth subsalicylate may be given to dogs to lessen the discomfort of stomach ache or vomiting from acid reflux. Never give this OTC medicine to cats. Consult your veterinarian for the appropriate dosage for your dog.

    Diet

    • Acid reflux in your dog can be reduced by feeding her small, frequent meals. Dietary fats and proteins should be given in limited quantities.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Acid reflux can cause esophagitis in dogs if left untreated. Reflux esophagitis is inflammation of the esophagus, caused by a back-flow of gastric fluid into the esophagus. If your dog is vomiting after meals, lethargic, losing weight, or has a loss in appetite it is important that you consult your veterinarian.
