How to Treat a Dog's Cracked Lips

If your dog has cracked or chapped lips, you should take her to a veterinarian. An inflammation of the lips, medically referred to as cheilitis, often results from an infection inside the mouth--though, occasionally, dogs develop chapped lips when outdoors in inclement weather. Once a dog's lips become chapped, the dog is likely to aggravate the condition by rubbing and pawing at her face. Until you take your pet to a veterinarian, you can offer some comforting treatments for the dog's chapped lips.

Things You'll Need

  • Hydrogen peroxide
  • Washcloth
  • Paper towels
  • Topical diaper rash cream
  • Petroleum jelly or aloe vera gel

Instructions

    • 1

Dilute hydrogen peroxide in a one-part peroxide, five-part water solution.

    • 2

Put the solution on the dog's lips each day while the condition persists. To do this, dip a washcloth in the solution and sponge it on the lips.

    • 3

Dry the dog's lips gently with a paper towel.

    • 4

Apply topical diaper rash cream to the lips.

    • 5

Apply petroleum jelly or aloe vera gel to the dog's lips to keep them moisturized and soft once they begin to heal.
