There are several possible causes for rashes to appear inside the ear of a dog. Rashes that are itchy and form a crust are especially worrisome and must be treated as soon as possible.

  1. Otitis Externa

    • Otitis externa is an inflammatory condition of the dog's external ear canal. DogTopics.com estimates that about 20 percent of all dogs get this condition.

    Ear Mites

    • According to PetHealth101.com, dogs with ear mites experience severe itching which is accompanied by a crusty discharge.

    Allergies

    • Eighty percent of ear problems that dogs have are related to allergies. Also, the constant scratching of the ears because of allergies may cause an infection.

    Things to Watch For

    • If your dog begins shaking his head or is constantly rubbing or scratching his ears he may have an ear infection. Infections also cause yellow, waxy discharge that can produce an odor.

    See the Vet

    • If your dog suffers from yellow, waxy discharge or has a foul odor coming from his ears, take him to the veterinarian to get a checkup. Your veterinarian will be able to determine the specific cause of the condition and give the dog proper treatment to relieve it.
