How to Splint a Dog's Paw

If you own a dog, emergencies can happen; especially since dogs love running and romping about. Just like people, dogs can twist or break their leg during play, or, as a result of an accident. Knowing how to splint a dog's paw in an emergency will help to stabilize his leg until you can get him to a veterinarian. While you may not have a pet splint available, you can use household items to construct a temporary one.

Things You'll Need

  • Newspaper
  • Magazines
  • Ace Bandage
  • Surgical tape
  • Water
  • Towels

Instructions

    • 1

Apply muzzle to dog. Your dog may be frightened and in pain; therefore, he may bite during treatment. (See Reference 2)

    • 2

Check injured area for bleeding. If there is any noticeable blood, use a clean towel and water to clean the wound applying mild pressure.

    • 3

Check injured paw for a fracture. If bone appears through the skin or your dog's paw is severely disfigured, wrap a newspaper or magazine around the paw and secure with surgical tape to stabilize it. Alternatively, you can use the ace bandage if there is not a lot of blood associated with the injury. (See Reference 2)

    • 4

Transport your dog to the veterinarian using a board or large blanket as a stretcher.
