Antibiotic Ear Drops for Dogs

Ear infections are common in some dogs, and these infections can be very uncomfortable. They cause itching, pain, and discharge. Normally, ear infections are treated with antibiotic drops, ointments, and sometimes oral medications. Cleaning the ear is also part of healing the ear.

  1. Features

    • Ear mites, bacteria, or yeast can cause ear infections in dogs. Antibiotic eardrops and ointments are prescribed to kill the bacteria, yeast, or mites.

    Treatment

    • Tresaderm is a commonly prescribed antibiotic for canine ear infections. It is for the treatment of inflammation as well as bacterial infections. Otomax is also used for bacterial infections; it is an ointment, but it is placed directly inside the ear.

    Significance

    • Ear infections are quite common in dogs, particularly dogs with big floppy ears; since the inner ear remains warm and moist, it is a breeding ground for bacteria.

    Considerations

    • Cleaning ears regularly with a gentle cleaner such as Oti-Soothe II can keep ears from becoming infected. This is an inexpensive treatment that can be found in your veterinarian's office or online.

    Warning

    • Red, inflamed ears with drainage need to be examined by a veterinarian as soon as possible. Chronic ear infections can be the result of an allergy.
