What to Give a Dog for Arthritis Pain

Arthritis is a condition where one or more joints in the body become inflamed due to the effects of the immune system or a breakdown of cartilage, the substance that insulates joints. In dogs, arthritis can cause severe joint pain that can limit mobility and requires treatment to maintain the animal's quality of life.

  1. Types of Drugs

    • The most commonly prescribed drugs for arthritis pain in dogs are the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicine Rimadyl, the disease-modifying agent drug Adequan, and Palaprin6, a pill that is similar to aspirin.

    Features

    • Rimadyl and Palaprin6 are both available as oral tablets that can be added to your dog's food or placed in its mouth. Adequan only comes in the form of an injection, and Rimadyl can also be given in injectable form.

    Function

    • All three arthritis pain medications work to alleviate inflammation in your dog's joints, which decreases pain. Adequan also helps your dog's body rebuild cartilage, which stops the progression of the disease.

    Risks

    • Risks associated with Rimadyl include gastrointestinal ulceration and liver damage. Adequan is less likely to cause toxic effects, but can result in skin irritation at the site of injection and gastrointestinal symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, and depression.

    Considerations

    • You may need to try different types or dosages of medications to find the one that is most effective for relieving arthritis pain in your dog. Never give your dog human medications to try and treat arthritis pain.
