Canine hookworms are a parasitic pest that attach to the walls of a dog's intestine. Adults feeds on the host's blood, and larva is passed through canine stools to infect other animals, as well as humans.

Prevention
-
To prevent both animals and humans from being infected (or re-infected), practice good hygiene habits. Dispose of all canine feces promptly.
"Green" Treatment
-
The green solution to treating hookworms is garlic and/or worm wood.
Veterinarian Treatment
-
Pyrantel pamoate can be used successfully to treat adult hookworms. Many veterinarians consider this de-wormer as one of the most effective.
Larva Treatment
-
Larva can be successfully treated with heartworm medication. You will still need to treat the adult hookworms with one of the above treatments.
Warning
-
When disposing of feces, be sure to wear gloves and shoes. The larva can infect humans, though canine hookworms cannot live in a human body. The larva can enter the body through your skin.
