Eye Nodules in Dogs

Dog eye nodules are raised bumps located around or in the eye. Eye nodules occur for a variety of reasons, including allergies, bacteria and infections. In some cases, the eye nodule is the result of an underlying and serious condition such as canine cancer.

  1. Episcleritis

    • According to Pet MD, one of the most common causes of eye nodules is episcleritis. This disorder causes pink, small, raised masses over the eye.

    Disorders

    • Another reason for eye disorders in dogs is melanocytic tumors. These tumors can arise in different parts of the eye and may need to be surgically removed. According to the Pet Center, a common eye disorder in puppies is called puppy pyoderma. Puppy pyoderma results in an eyelid abscess.

    Considerations

    • Different breeds have their own set of common eye disorders. Keeping informed about the particular breed of the dog is helpful. For example, cocker spaniels frequently suffer from dry eyes.

    Treatment

    • Some eye nodules can easily be treated with eye drops or topical ointments. However, there are cases where surgical removal of the nodule is needed. This is especially true if the eye nodule is cancerous.

    Solution

    • The best thing that a pet owner can do is get the eye nodule evaluated by a veterinarian without delay. The sooner the dog receives treatment, the more likely they are to save their pet's eye function.
