Seizures & Severe Food Allergy in Dogs

Dogs, just like people, can develop severe food allergies, and some dogs may even be prone to seizures due to the allergy. Finding the offending allergy is key when a dog tends to have seizures.

  1. Features

    • Many commercial dog foods contain dyes and other additives to make them look more appealing to the owner; the dog does not care about the color of its food. Some additives can cause major problems such as seizures in sensitive dogs.

    Food

    • Dogs with allergies and/or seizures may not always be reacting to the dyes or additives in the food. Occasionally, an actual food product, such as grains or even a meat product, may trigger allergic reactions in dogs and potentially cause a seizure.

    Significance

    • Dogs with suspected allergies can have an allergy test performed by a veterinarian. This test will show exact allergies so you know what to avoid. When a food is the allergen source that causes the seizure, avoiding it for the rest of the pet's life is key.

    Considerations

    • Common food allergens for dogs are beef, chicken, corn, wheat, eggs, and fish. Most dogs with allergies will bite at their feet and will regularly scratch themselves.

    Warning

    • When a dog has a seizure, they need to be evaluated by a veterinarian in order to determine the cause. Make sure to let the veterinarian know what kind of dog food the dog is eating.
