As your dog gets older, he may develop degenerative conditions common to aging pets. Spondylosis is a bone condition in which the vertebrae of your dog's spine grow bone spurs and eventually become fused together. While there is no known cure, by understanding spondylosis you can plan effective treatments for your dog.

Spondylosis Symptoms and Treatments
Diagnose spondylosis in your dog. According to HelpMyHound, "Symptoms of spondylosis may include back pain, back stiffness and the dog may whine or cry when touched in the back area." Make an appointment with your veterinarian and describe your dog's symptoms. Ask your vet to perform an x-ray to confirm spondylosis.
Treat your dog's spondylosis symptoms. Ask your vet about anti-inflammatory medications for your dog's stiffness. Some vets suggest trying acupuncture. Have your vet prescribe pain medications if your dog's pain is too serious for over-the-counter medications. Some dogs don't have any pain issues from spondylosis, so your dog may only lose some flexibility.
Ask your vet if your dog needs surgery for her spondylosis. Surgery may be indicated if your dog's bone growth is damaging her tissues, or if pressure on the nerves is causing her severe pain. Assess your dog's pain levels and take her to the vet immediately if her pain becomes unmanageable. If your vet chooses surgery, make sure he prescribes enough pain medications for your dog's recovery.
