What Are the Treatments for a Loss of Appetite in Dogs?

Dogs normally lose their appetite if they are bored with or dislike the current food their owner is giving them. Most dogs can be persuaded to eat if presented with the right food.

  1. Features

    • Dogs lose their appetite for the same reasons humans do--stress, change of environment and change of seasons.

    Meat

    • One way to get a dog to eat is by offering it a meat product such as boiled chicken with rice, which is a favorite for most dogs and will not cause stomach upset.

    Herbs

    • Some dogs are picky eaters and herbs can help stimulate the appetite. Dried herbs such as alfalfa, dandelion, and peppermint stimulate the appetite.

    Dosing Herbs

    • Dried herbs should be given in proper doses: If the dog is 5 to 12 pounds, 1 to 2 teaspoons per day; dogs 14 to 25 pounds, 2 to 3 teaspoons per day, and dogs heavier than 25 pounds should get 3 to 4 teaspoons per day. Always begin with the smaller amount.

    Significance

    • Domesticated dogs can become bored with food. Work with your veterinarian to select foods that can be rotated every month or two to keep the dog eating and healthier with a variety of foods.

    Considerations and Warning

    • Most dog food manufacturers have sample bags of food. Purchase several different brands and present a few side-by-side to your dog, and see which one it prefers.

If your dog refuses to eat anything for three days, the dog needs to be examined by a veterinarian since there may be an underlying illness.
