Although several years ago the diagnosis of diabetes in dogs was considered a life sentence, the good news is that today diabetes not only can be controlled, but also dogs can lead normal lives. Important considerations to grant a favorable prognosis will be outlined here.
-
Considerations
-
There are three types of diabetes in dogs: diabetes mellitus (sugar diabetes), diabetes insipidus (water diabetes) and gestational diabetes. Diabetes mellitus is by far the most common.
Definition
-
Diabetes mellitus occurs when there is insufficient production of the hormone insulin, which regulates blood sugar.
Effects
-
The main goal for controlling diabetes is to ensure blood glucose levels are kept in check, which is accomplished by giving a dog daily insulin injections.
Prognosis
-
The earlier diabetes is diagnosed, the more favorable the prognosis. Generally dogs do well if they receive daily injections, if glucose levels are routinely monitored and if a good diet and exercise regimen is followed.
Warning
-
To ensure that the dog's blood glucose levels are well regulated, routine blood glucose curve tests are recommended. Such tests require a 24-hour hospitalization, allowing frequent blood tests to be carried out throughout the day.
