Many of us have dogs who seem to scratch constantly. What causes a dog's skin to itch? A variety of factors can cause skin irritation to our canine companions. It's important for the health of our dogs to recognize the common causes of itchy skin, in order to stop Scooter from scratching all day.

Why Skin?
-
The skin is largest organ in the dog's body. As a covering for the dog, the skin is exposed to external irritants. In addition, internal irritants can manifest symptoms in the skin. Since the skin is so easy to examine, skin infections and irritations are easily visible, and may show signs of more serious internal disorders.
Flea Allergies
-
According to veterinarian Carol Foil, fleas and flea allergies are the most common cause of itching skin in dogs. Dogs with flea allergies will react to the flea saliva left on the skin after the flea bites. For most dogs with flea allergies, even the presence of only a few fleas will cause significant discomfort and irritation to the skin. Complete flea control must be used to eliminate the irritation.
Food Allergies
-
Some dogs will develop allergies to particular foods. The most common culprits are beef, dairy, corn and wheat. Food allergies generally manifest as skin irritations. In severe cases of food allergies, dogs will begin to scratch off fur and skin, often leading to secondary skin infections.
Mange Mites
-
There are two forms of mange: demodectic and sarcoptic. Both forms are caused by tiny, microscopic mites on the skin. In both forms, the infected dog's skin will be extremely itchy. Often, the scratching will lead to secondary skin infections. Neither form of mange can be resolved with home remedies; both require prescription medication for treatment, so any dog with suspected mange should be seen by a veterinarian.
Atopic Dermatitis
-
Atopic dermatitis is the term for general immune-related responses to common allergens, such as mold and grass pollen. Dogs with atopic dermatitis will often scratch incessantly, chew and lick their feet, and paw at their ears when they come into contact with the allergens. The only definitive way to diagnose atopic dermatitis is through extensive allergy testing, so owners may choose to try to eliminate common causes first.
