Antibiotic Treatment for Cystitis in Puppies

Acute cystitis is severe inflammation of the urinary bladder. When it occurs in puppies, it causes extreme pain and can lead to severe complications. Antibiotics are administered to clear the condition up and usually lead to a full recovery.

  1. Cause

    • Acute cystitis is caused by a bacterial infection. The bacteria usually comes from the puppy's own intestinal tract, and the bacterial travels into the bladder. Female puppies are more likely to develop the condition than males are.

    Symptoms

    • Symptoms of acute cystitis include blood in urine, pain while urinating and increased urination.

    Diagnosis

    • Diagnosis of acute cystitis is done through urinary analysis to check for bacteria. Bacteria being found in the urine is a red flag to a veterinarian that the puppy is suffering from acute cystitis.

    Treatment

    • Antibiotics are used to treat acute cystitis. Penicillins are most effective at treating the condition because they are very highly concentrated in urine. Your veterinarian will prescribe an antibiotic treatment to be administered orally to your puppy during her treatment.

    Duration of Treatment

    • Antibiotics to treat acute cystitis are usually administered for 2 to 3 weeks after diagnosis. If you are treating your puppy for acute cystitis, follow your veterinarian's directions precisely. The antibiotics should be given at the same time everyday.
