There are many reasons why your dog is experiencing pain. If he seems ill or is injured, schedule an appointment with the veterinarian. After an appointment, or for minor problems, ease your dog's pain with medicine at home.

Benefits
-
Aspirin is the safest "people" medicine for dogs and is used to lower fevers, reduce inflammation and inhibit pain.
Dosage
-
Give your dog 10 mg of aspirin per pound of body weight every eight to 12 hours, as needed.
Types
-
When administering aspirin, make sure the aspirin isn't enteric-coated. Dogs can't digest the enteric coating, so the aspirin can remain in the dog's system and potentially cause on overdose.
Acetaminophen
-
Acetaminophen is useful for lowering fever and reducing pain that isn't caused by inflammation. Give your dog five to 10 mg of acetaminophen per pound of body weight. Use acetaminophen with caution due to the high potential for permanent liver damage.
Considerations
-
For continuous pain from conditions like arthritis, glucosamine and chondroitin supplements can help rebuild cartilage and reduce pain. They are safer for longer-term use.
Warning
-
Never give your dog ibuprofen. Ibuprofen is toxic for dogs and can cause permanent liver and kidney damage, gastric ulcers and death.
