How to Make Natural Cough Medicine for Dogs

Dogs can catch "kennel cough," or tracheobronchitis, which is similar to the common cold. Kennel cough is not a major health concern, and the cough needs to simply run its course, but it is possible to treat the symptoms, like a dry or hacking cough. The symptoms of coughing can last anywhere from one to three weeks. By combining a few natural items, you can create a cough medicine to help alleviate painful symptoms of coughing.

Things You'll Need

  • Warm water
  • Medicine dropper
  • Honey
  • Peppermint
  • Wild cherry bark

    • 1

Pour about a cup of warm water into a glass or bowl.

    • 2

Add honey to the water. About one or two teaspoons of honey per cup will help ease irritation in the throat from coughing.

    • 3

Mix a teaspoon or two of wild cherry bark tincture or syrup into the mixture. This is a bitter herb which reduces throat inflammation.

    • 4

Crush a handful of peppermint leaves and add them to the mixture. This helps soothe the throat as well as covering the bitter taste of the wild cherry bark.

    • 5

Mix and then leave the tea-like mixture to steep in the warm water.

    • 6

Administer the mixture to your dog with a medicine dropper. Only a few drops should be needed, and you can re-administer as the symptoms reappear.
