Shrubs Harmful to Dogs

Several ornamental bushes are highly toxic to dogs. Although a dog may not be attracted to consume them, they are all common in residential landscape design. Therefore, accidental ingestion is possible. Consuming leaves or berries may cause symptoms ranging from minor abdominal pain, to coma and death.

  1. Lantana

    • Lantana is also known as red sage and yellow sage. When the unripe berries are ingested, labored breathing, vomiting and diarrhea occur.

    Holly

    • Ingesting the leaves and berries of the holly bush causes lethargy, vomiting, and diarrhea.

    Burning Bush

    • Burning bush is also called spindle tree. Consuming leaves in small doses causes abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness. Large doses cause an abnormal heartbeat.

    Black Laurel

    • Black laurel is among the most toxic of plants. Alternate names are dog bush, dog hobble and fetter bush. Even a small volume of leaves can cause increased salivation, vomiting, low blood pressure, weakness, coma and death.

    Lily-of-the-Valley Bush

    • The lily-of-the-valley bush is deadly. The entire plant is poisonous to canines. Symptoms of poisoning are depression, low blood pressure and cardiovascular collapse. Poisoning can quickly lead to coma and death.
