Side Effects of Proin in Dogs

Proin is a prescription medication for dogs that is commonly used to treat incontinence and it can cause side effects.

  1. Identification

    • Proin is also known as phenylpropanolamine or Propaline. This medication works to reduce the amount of urine leaked by affecting the urethral sphincter of the dog.

    Considerations

    • Proin may take several weeks to be helpful in reducing urine leakage in dogs. This medication is usually given two or three times daily, and it is important that the dog be monitored by a veterinarian while taking Proin.

    Effects

    • The most common side effects associated with the use of Proin are irritability, restlessness, loss of appetite, increased heart rate and increased blood pressure.

    Serious Side Effects

    • Occasionally, Proin can cause serious side effects in dogs such as seizures, pale gums, weakness and difficulty urinating.

    Warning

    • Proin should not be used during pregnancy, as it may cause birth defects. Dogs that are allergic to this medication should not use Proin, as well as dogs that suffer from diabetes, heart conditions, glaucoma, high blood pressure, enlarged prostate and hyperthyroidism.
