The prostate gland is found in male dogs and produces fluids that aid in mating. Several issues can affect the prostate including prostate enlargement, bacterial infections (prostatitis) and cancer of the prostate gland. Signs of a prostate problem in dogs are often easy for owners and veterinarians to recognize.
-
Constipation
-
When an enlarged prostate presses against the rectum, it can cause constipation in the dog. When the dog is able to defecate, the feces may appear thin and tape-like.
Urination
-
Some dogs with a prostate infection may strain during urination. They may also void only small amounts of urine, or urine that is cloudy or bloody.
Fever
-
Particularly with prostate infections, the dog may have an elevated temperature.
Gait
-
Prostate problems can cause a stiff gait or cause the dog to take smaller steps when walking.
Dishcarge
-
There may be blood or a pus-like discharge coming from the dog's penis.
Additional Symptoms
-
Other signs of prostate issues include weakness or pain in the rear legs, lethargy, weight loss, listlessness, lack of appetite and vomiting.
