Is Dramamine Safe for Dogs?

Dimenhydrinate, sold under the brand name Dramamine, is an antihistamine that is also beneficial for controlling nausea. Many dogs suffer from car sickness, and Dramamine can be an effective preventative. Dramamine isn't FDA-approved for treatment in dogs but is used by veterinarians to treat nausea under the rules of off-label use.

    • In addition to motion sickness, Dramamine can help pets that have vestibular disorders of the inner ear that cause imbalance, nausea and dizziness.

    Dosage

    • Dogs should receive 2 to 4 mgs per pound of body weight every eight hours, as needed.

    Dispensing

    • Dramamine is an oral medication and should be given to dogs by mouth. You can crush the tablets and put the powder into your dog's food.

    Side Effects

    • Side effects in dogs who receive Dramamine include sedation, drowsiness, fatigue, diarrhea and vomiting.

    Warning

    • Dogs with glaucoma, thyroid disorders, a history of seizures or heart problems should be given Dramamine.
