Having indoor pets or living in a wooded area can result in flea-infested carpets. According to Pestic, conventional flea sprays and powders can be toxic to people and animals, and they sometimes leave strong odors. Fortunately, there are several natural remedies that will rid your carpets of fleas.
-
Diatomaceous earth
-
Diatomaceous earth is a naturally occurring product that is produced from small fossilized water plants. Diatomaceous earth can be found in most feed stores. You can apply it to your carpet and then vacuum. It works very well in killing fleas and can be used both inside and outside of your home.
Salt and baking soda
-
Mix equal parts salt and baking soda. The PetInfo website advises working the mixture into your carpet and vacuuming two days later. This is a completely natural remedy and works very well.
Essential oils
-
Essential oils, such as lemongrass, lavender and citronella, are another option. You can put the essential oil in a spray bottle, spray on the carpet and then vacuum in a few hours. Essential oils are also safe to spray on pets and help flea bites heal.
Treat other areas
-
Fleas will remain in bedding and on furniture, too; so, be sure to wash bedding and treat inside and around the house. And, of course, be sure to treat your pet!
Tips
-
Vacuum carpet and furniture on a daily basis and do follow-up treatments in case larvae hatch. Fleas reproduce very quickly, and it usually takes several treatments to be completely rid of them.
Additionally, if you put cedar wood chips outside your home, it will provide a barrier from fleas entering your home. You can also place cedar chips under pets bedding or under furniture to help control the flea population in your carpet.
Warning
-
Use a face mask when using diatomaceous earth, and do not use it around children, pets or elderly people. It is natural; however, it can cause respiratory problems if inhaled. Additionally, use gloves when using any kind of flea treatment.
For any product that you use, be sure to read about any warnings for that product.
