If your dog has tested positive for heart worms, it is important to give your dog heart worm medication. This is one of the only ways you can rid your animal of worms. It is also important that you do not use heart worm prevention medication while using the actual heart worm medicine. The two pills can counteract one another and cause some serious health risks for your pet.
Things You'll Need
- Heart worm medication
Instructions
Act excited when you are about to give the dog the heart worm medicine. If you are excited about giving the medicine, the dog is more likely to become excited when receiving the medicine.
Have the dog perform a few tricks and commands before giving the heart worm medicine. Act as if it is a treat for doing something good. If the dog thinks it is receiving a treat, it is more likely to eat it, despite the flavor.
Put the pill in the dog's mouth and hold their mouth shut if they refuse to eat it. Holding the mouth shut may force the dog to swallow the medication.
Mix the pill in with their food. If your dog is a faster eater he or she probably won't even realize they just ingested the heart worm medication.
Cover the pill in peanut butter and smear it onto a dog treat as a last resort. The peanut butter is going to cover up the taste of the heart worm medicine and the dog should eat it without putting up too much of a fuss.
