Anti Fungal Shampoo for Dogs

Canine fungal infections cause a skin condition more commonly known as ringworm. The most prevalent areas that are affected are the dog's head and legs. An antifungal shampoo for dogs is the standard treatment.

  1. Typical Fungi

    • Fungal infections found in dogs are usually caused by two types of fungi, Microsporum and Trichophyton. Both of these fungi cause the skin disorder called ringworm.

    Symptoms of Ringworm

    • Ringworm usually presents on a dog's head or legs and appears as hair loss in circular patches.

    Medications in Dog Shampoos

    • Any of the following should be listed as an ingredient in an antifungal shampoo for dogs: Benzoyl Peroxide, miconazole, ketoconazole, enilconazole, flucanazole, selenium sulfide or Chlorhexidine Gluconate.

Antifungal Dog Shampoos Found on the Market

    • Dermazole contains miconazole and runs about $17 for 8oz. The First Veterinary Ketoconazole Shampoo costs about $12 for 8oz.. Malaseb Shampoo contains miconazole with a price tag of about $40 for 8oz. Vet Solutions Universal Medicated Shampoo can be found for about $20 for a 16oz. bottle.

    Using the Shampoo

    • As dogs have a different pH level than humans, only shampoos that have been specially formulated for dogs should be used. A 10 to 15 minute contact time should be allowed in order for the antifungal shampoo to be effective.
