Side Effects of Piroxicam in Dogs

If your dog is being treated for squamous cell carcinoma, transitional cell carcinoma, bladder cancer or mammary adenocarcinoma, your veterinarian may prescribe the use of piroxicam for its tumor fighting capabilities. Piroxicam, commonly sold under the brand name Feldene, is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that was prescribed for years for the pain management of arthritis. It is also effective at inhibiting the production of COX-2 enzymes, reducing the proliferation of cancerous cells and strengthening immune function to combat various types of tumors. To ensure safe and effective treatment for your dog, be sure to take note of side effects when initiating a piroxicam regimen.

  1. Side Effects of Piroxicam

    • Piroxicam can pose side effects of gastrointestinal symptoms, such as vomiting, diarrhea and ulcerations in the digestive tract. Piroxicam should not be used in patients with kidney or liver diseases, as the drug can compromise kidney or liver function. For this reason, periodic blood testing may be recommended with long-term use of piroxicam to monitor these functions. Piroxicam can increase bleeding and raise blood pressure, and therefore should not be used with additional non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, anticoagulants or diuretics. Other side effects of piroxicam include fever, lethargy and signs of allergic reaction, such as hives or labored breathing. Contact your veterinarian immediately if you notice any of these side effects or other unusual signs or behaviors in your dog while treating him with piroxicam.
