Remedies for Intense Itching Canine

It is not uncommon for a dog to scratch itself often, but if your dog is scratching too much it means something may be wrong. Dogs can scratch themselves relentlessly because of dry skin, allergies or parasites, such as fleas and ticks. Parasites should be removed using a medicated shampoo designed to kill fleas and ticks. Dry skin and allergies that cause itching can be treated with some simple home remedies.

  1. Epsom Salt

    • One way to stop an itchy dog from scratching is to give the dog a bath with some Epsom salt. Fill up the bathtub with some warm water and about a cup of Epsom salt. Allow the Epsom salt to dissolve, then place the dog in the tub and pour the water over the dog's skin. Just make sure the dog does not drink any of the water as Epsom salt is not safe to ingest.

    Olive Oil

    • If your dog is scratching because of dry, itchy skin, olive oil is a good remedy. Skin can become very dry in the winter months or from bathing too frequently. Olive oil contains healthy fats that can put your dog's skin back in balance. Add one tablespoon of olive oil to your dog's regular food once or twice a week. Most dogs find olive oil to be palatable, so getting the dog to eat it should not be a problem.

    Vitamin E

    • Vitamin E is another option for helping an intensely itchy dog. It can help moisturize the skin while soothing itchiness and preventing infection in any open sores the dog may have from scratching. Vitamin E is widely available in capsule form and can be fed to the dog orally. The capsules can also be opened and the oil applied directly to the skin.

    Oatmeal

    • Oatmeal is an effective solution against dry skin or skin irritated by allergies. To give your dog an oatmeal bath, simply fill up the bathtub with warm water, add about a cup and a half of oatmeal, and pour the water over your dog's skin. You can also try preparing oatmeal with water, allowing it to cool, and rubbing the oatmeal directly on the dog's skin. This should be left on for 10 minutes or so, then rinsed off.
