Defensor 3 Side Effects

Defensor 3 is a veterinary product used as a rabies vaccine that lasts for three years. It is used to prevent rabies in dogs, cats, cattle and sheep.

  1. Side Effects

    • If used properly, Defensor 3 is safe. However, pet owners should be aware that a few side effects can occur.

    Allergic Reaction

    • Anaphylaxis is a severe allergic reaction that will occur immediately after exposure to the allergen. Watch for signs such as skin rash, swollen tongue or throat, and nausea.

    Gentamicin Reactions

    • Gentamicin is an antibiotic, but it is used as a preservative in Defensor 3. Animals hypersensitive to gentamicin may experience side effects such as facial swelling, vomiting, diarrhea, kidney damage and hearing loss.

    Allergy Antidote

    • If your animal has an allergic reaction to Defensor 3, epinephrine is recommended as an antidote. Follow with supportive therapy recommended by your veterinarian.

    Considerations

    • Your pet or farm animal must be at least 3 months old for safe use of Defensor 3.
