How to Treat Low Blood Sugar in Yorkie Puppies

Yorkshire terrier puppies, like all other dogs and humans, can fall victim to hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar. Puppies who are plagued with this disorder can suffer from fatigue, seizures and disorientation. If left untreated, severe hypoglycemia can even lead to death. With proper diet, exercise and a helpful veterinarian, you can control and even cure your Yorkie puppy's low blood sugar.

Things You'll Need

  • Corn syrup
  • Puppy food
  • Water
  • Insulin

Instructions

    • 1

Talk to your veterinarian. He or she will be able to accurately diagnosis your puppy with hypoglycemia and, if needed, give you insulin to help control its blood sugar levels.

    • 2

Feed your puppy a proper diet. Only give your Yorkie food that is designed for his or her age, size and breed. Never give him or her table scraps or any sweets. Make sure that your puppy also has plenty of water to drink throughout the day.

    • 3

If your puppy appears run down, apply corn syrup to his or her gums. This will help lift your puppy's blood sugar levels quickly. A puppy that is unresponsive or experiencing a seizure should not be given this treatment because he or she may choke.

    • 4

Give your puppy a smaller, structured play area. Do not allow him or her to run freely in a backyard or the dog park. Too much physical activity can cause your puppy to tire, which could cause his or her blood sugar levels to drop.

    • 5

If your Yorkie puppy is prescribed insulin, make sure to administer his or her dose on a regular schedule. A puppy that is not given insulin on a structured schedule can relapse, which could lead to a seizure or even death.
