Mupirocin Ointment for Dogs

Mupirocin ointment is used for dogs who have skin infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus intermedius, also known as staph. Mupirocin is also used to treat pyoderma, a condition that produces pus in the skin due to multiple causes.

  1. Function

    • Mupirocin works by inhibiting the growth factor bacteria need in order to replicate. Since Mupirocin works differently than most antibiotics, it can be used to augment treatment with oral and I.V. antibiotics such as gentamicin, penicillin, streptomycin and tetracycline.

    Application

    • Your vet will have you apply Mupirocin to the affected area twice daily, ensuring you completely cover the wound.

    Contraindications

    • If your dog has a known allergy to antibiotics or any ingredients in Mupirocin, he shouldn't use the ointment.

    Side Effects

    • Side effects are rare, with the most common being skin irritation. Some dogs might be allergic to the medication, so watch for difficulty breathing or signs of discomfort after you have applied the ointment.

    Time Frame

    • Mupirocin shouldn't be used continuously for longer than 30 days.
