Acepromazine, known by the brand name Promace, is a tranquilizer and also classified as an antihistamine. It is available in tablets and injections in 5 mg, 10 mg and 25 mg doses.

Usage

Acepromazine is used in preparation for animal surgery, stabilize heart rhythm, motion sickness and to suppress fear. It also has antinauseal capabilities.
Side Effects

Promace can last six to eight hours as a tranquilizer. There can be a drop in blood pressure or aggressive behavior in some dogs. Animals on Promace may have their third eyelid brought up.
Warning

Tablets should not be in the light, and they can't be absorbed as consistent as the injection. It shouldn't be used by dogs with seizure disorders, anemia or with liver disease.
Interactions

Do not use acepromazine with antacids, quinidine (a medication for the heart) or organophosphate insecticides (in some flea collars).
Sensitivity

Whippets, greyhounds, wolfhounds and dogs known as "sighthounds" are sensitive to Promace effects and should be given alternative medication.
