Canine diabetes is a common dog ailment in which your dog does make any insulin or does not respond to the insulin that it does make. This condition is treated through insulin shots and B12 supplements like methylcobalamin. Some people give methylcobalamin tablets to their dog by mixing it with food. That method is easier, but not all dogs accept it; those that do may not always get the correct dosage this way. The surest way to give your dog methylcobalamin is to insert it into his mouth.
Things You'll Need
- Dog treats
Instructions
Position the methylcobalamin tablet in one hand comfortably. Take your dog to a familiar, quiet place.
Hold your dog̵7;s muzzle firmly, thumb on one side and your fingers on the other. Use the hand that is not holding the pill. Tilt his head back so that his eyes face the ceiling. Squeeze his muzzle right behind the teeth. His jaw should automatically open up.
Push the dog's mouth open further. Using the hand holding the methylcobalamin tablet, maniupulate your fingers into the open mouth, exercising care around her teeth. Place the tablet in the back of her mouth, as far back as you can without causing your dog to gag..
Close the dog̵7;s muzzle and hold it closed. Lower his head to make it easier for the dog to swallow the tablet.
Give the dog ample praise and a treat after she swallows. This creates positive reinforcement for her good behavior.
