Keeping your dogs teeth healthy is as important as keeping your teeth healthy. You go to the dentist every six months but with dog dental care running in the hundreds of dollars, learning to provide non-sedation teeth cleaning at home yourself is both safe and affordable.
Along with routine brushing and crunchy treats for cleaning teeth, cleaning your dog's teeth with a scraper or scaler will keep your dog's teeth healthy throughout his entire life-cycle.
Things You'll Need
- Stainless Steal Scaler (metal scraper)
- Tooth Brush
- Rubbing Alcohol
- Peroxide
- 2 Small empty dishes
- Small dish of water
- Paper towels
- Hand towels
- Crunchy treats
Instructions
Preparation is likely the most important factor. Having all your supplies within arms reach will help this process go quickly and easily. Clean a small work station for yourself and your dog with bleach solution or rubbing alcohol. Set up in a neat row a few tablespoons of Rubbing Alcohol in a small dish, a small dish of water, paper towels, hand towels and a few treats. Be sure all your tools are clean as well.
Call your dog over to the prepared station and require he sit. Pull up your dogs lips, then use the scraper / scaler to scrap along the gum line and between your dog's teeth. Have a paper towel in your lap so any plaque you remove can be wiped on the towel, rinsed in the small dish of water and continue scraping. Repeat the lower teeth the same as the upper teeth.
You will likely see small amounts of bleeding. Be sure to be gentle long the gum line.
After you are done scraping, take a tooth brush, dip it in the peroxide and then brush your dog's teeth.
Then rinse the brush in the dish of water, and brush your dog's teeth once more just to give his mouth a rinse.
Then finish up with giving your dog a few treats and lots of praise and love. Be sure to be use verbal praise during the entire process. Your dog will love you for it.
