Both conventional medicines and natural remedies are available to relieve asthma symptoms in dogs. They usually work by reducing inflammation and dilating air passages.

A popular asthma treatment for people, theophylline is prescribed for dogs with asthma to dilate the bronchial passages. It is generally used in pill form.
Steroids

Steroids such as prednisone and prednisolone help with asthmatic symptoms by reducing inflammation in the respiratory airways. They are available in pill or injectable form.
Inhaled Medication

A newer option is using an inhaled medication for dogs. Albuterol, commonly used by people with asthma, is available for dogs, as is fluticasone (known as Flovent), a steroid.
Tylophora

Tylophora indica is an ayurvedic remedy that is effective in treating asthma symptoms in people and animals, including dogs.
Quercetin

The bioflavonoid quercetin is an anti-inflammatory and can provide relief for asthmatic symptoms in dogs by reducing inflammation.
Lobelia

Lobelia is a bronchodilator and is thus effective for relieving asthma. It was even the topic of veterinary state board questions going back to the early twentieth century (see Resources).
