Performing Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation, or CPR, on your puppy can be a frightening experience. It is important to remain calm and first access if your puppy requires this procedure. Administer CPR on your drowning puppy only if you cannot see or hear any heartbeat and if she has stopped breathing. Proceed with extreme caution as CPR can cause damage, or even result in death, if not properly performed.
Instructions
Rescue your puppy from the water and place her on a flat surface on her right side.
Clear the puppy's airway of any obstructions. Sweep the tongue to one side with two fingers and dislodge any foreign object that may be impairing the puppy's breathing.
Cup both of your palms. Place each cupped hand on either side of the puppy just above the region of the heart. Perform chest compressions. Press down 1 inch on the puppy's chest and count to one. Release the compression and count to one again. Perform 100 chest compressions every minute.
Hold compressions and breathe into the puppy's nose every three to five compressions, if you are alone. If another person is available to aid you in CPR, one of you performs compressions while the other breathes into the puppy's nose, still every three to five compressions. Count out loud during each compression.
Administer CPR while you are physically able to do so, or until the puppy's pulse is regular and steady, and he is breathing normally. A puppy's normal pulse rate is anywhere from 70-180 beats per minute.
