Many pet owners, concerned by the risks and side effects of conventional veterinary treatment, are turning to alternative medicine methods such as homeopathy for what they will believe will be safer treatments for various conditions. Disorders of the thyroid gland, which controls many of the body's functions, are among those that can be treated with homeopathic medicines.

Hypothyroidism
-
Hypothyroidism, or an underactive thyroid gland, is characterized in dogs primarily by weight gain, lethargy and hair loss. Only tests conducted by a veterinarian can conclusively determine if a dog suffers from hypothyroidism.
Once hypothyroidism has been diagnosed in your dog, there are two forms of available homeopathic medicines. The first, brand-named Thyro-pet, contains homeopathic medicines believed to support the thyroid, energy levels and circulation. The second, brand-named Thyroid Soothe, contains medicines believed to address the symptoms of hypothyroidism including loss of appetite and energy, as well as the emotional symptoms associated with this disorder.
Most of the ingredients of both Thyro-pet and Thyroid Soothe are available separately as homeopathic preparations. However, consultation with a homeopathic veterinarian is recommended to establish the proper dosage for your pet.
Hyperthyroidism
-
Hyperthyroidism, or an overactive thyroid gland, in dogs is characterized by weight loss, an increased appetite and increased heart rate. Dogs with hyperthyroidism eat and eat but fail to gain weight. Sadly, hyperthyroidism in dogs is not treatable with any currently known conventional or homeopathic medicines. Canine hyperthyroidism is almost always due to a fast-growing thyroid cancer and has very low survival rates.
