Aspirin for Arthritis Pain in Dogs

Canine arthritis is a common medical condition causing swollen and painful joints. Many canine arthritis treatment options are available, including massage, low-impact exercise and pain management medication such as aspirin.

  1. Popularity

    • Aspirin is a popular treatment for arthritis in humans and dogs alike due to it's anti-inflammatory properties. Aspirin also costs less than some prescribed canine arthritis medications.

    Benefits

    • Aspirin reduces swelling of the joints. A known pain and fever reducer, aspirin will make an arthritic dog comfortable.

    Side Effects

    • Aspirin is known to cause gastrointestinal problems in dogs including ulcers, nausea and vomiting.

    Considerations

    • Aspirin only provides temporary relief of canine arthritis symptoms, and most veterinarians recommend prescription Rimadyl as a better treatment option for dogs.

    Warnings

    • Consult a veterinarian before administering aspirin to any dog, as too large of a dose can be toxic to a dog even if it is baby aspirin. Never give a dog Tylenol, Advil or similar products in place of real aspirin as they can be toxic. Aspirin is not for young dogs and must be given with food to avoid stomach problems.
