The lymph system is responsible for transporting white blood cells and is integral to the dog's immune system. Lymphoma is a condition where lymphocytes become cancerous. Lymphocytes are white blood cells that are an important component for fighting viruses, bacteria and other invaders in a dog's body. Lymphoma occurs when the mechanism regulating lymphocyte production malfunctions, allowing the cells to proliferate, mutate and form tumors. In addition to conventional treatments, alternative medicine is a viable option for some dogs with lymphoma.

Nutrition
-
According to naturopath Robert McDowell, N.D., recipient of Australia's Royal Humane Society Gold Medal, one alternative treatment for lymphoma is to change the dog's diet to one free of preservatives, additives and chemicals to reduce stress to the digestive system. A more natural diet requires the liver to process fewer toxins, thus improving the dog's overall health.
Herbs
-
There are several herbs that can support the dog's immune system and enhance modern treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation. Red clover has anti-tumor properties that can inhibit the growth of tumors. Burdock root can stimulate the liver to aid with eliminating toxins. Alfalfa can reduce the growth of cancer cells. Milk thistle is another herb beneficial for the liver and can protect it against the side effects of chemotherapy. The EGCG in green tea has tumor-inhibiting properties.
Tumeric and ginger both stop the proliferation of cancer cells and cause tumors to shrink. Those herbs are commonly used in India, in ayruvedic medicine.
Mistletoe promotes apoptosis--the death of cancer cells--and has anti-metastatic properties. Mistletoe can be dangerous and should only be used under the guidance of a veterinarian trained in herbal medicine.
Traditional Chinese Medicine
-
The Chinese have used herbs, acupressure and acupuncture for hundreds to thousands of years. Reishi mushrooms are commonly used in TCM for their immune-boosting abilities, along with anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory and tumor-inhibiting properties. In TCM, both acupuncture and acupressure are believed to work on the meridians, or energy pathways, of the body to remove blockages, purge the system and inhibit cancer growth.
