Home Remedies for a Dog with Dry Skin

Dry skin can be very uncomfortable for your dog, leaving it to scratch relentlessly, even causing sores and lesions. Dry skin can be caused by dry winter air, indoor heating, harsh shampoos, bathing too often, or poor diet. There are several home remedies to help restore a healthy moisture balance to your dog's skin. However, these are not a substitute for advice from a veterinarian. If dry skin symptoms persist after treatment with home remedies, take your dog to the vet as soon as possible.

  1. Nutrition

    • Dry or itchy skin on a dog is often caused by food allergies or a dog food that is not high enough in essential oils. Feed the dog a food that is high in protein and contains only small amounts of grains, since these are often the cause of allergic reactions. Look for a food that contains flaxseed oil, which is a good source of fatty acids that keep the skin and coat in good condition.

    Bathing

    • Shampoos tend to strip the skin and coat of the natural oils that protect them and seal in moisture. Bathing a dog too often can make dry skin even worse. Bathe as little as possible and use a shampoo formulated to be soothing and moisturizing, such as one containing oatmeal or Vitamin E. Also try using a moisturizing rinse or conditioner specifically meant for dogs after every shampoo.

    Fish Oil

    • Fish is full of essential fatty acids that help keep skin and hair moisturized and supple. Fish oil is available in both capsule and oil form. You can give your dog a fish oil capsule or put a tablespoon of the oil into the food a few times a week. The oil can also be applied to the skin topically and combed through the fur to moisturize skin and relieve itching.

    Oatmeal

    • Mix oatmeal with some water and rub it on the dog's skin and coat. Leave on for ten minutes and rinse off with plain water. If you're worried about being able to get the oatmeal out of the dog's coat, try using a little more water in the mix and straining the oatmeal before you use it.

    Olive Oil

    • Try adding a tablespoon to your dog's food two or three times a week. The healthy oils will help restore the skin's natural state of moisture and leave the coat looking shiny and healthy.
