How Do I Treat a Dog With Asthma?

Although asthma in dogs is rare, it does occur. It's a severe allergic reaction that develops when the bronchi fill with mucus and go into spasms. The condition is sometimes referred to as "allergic bronchitis." If your dog experiences regular asthma attacks, it is important to speak with your veterinarian and learn how to treat the symptoms.

  1. Causes and Symptoms

    • Dogs with asthma will be free of symptoms most of the time. However, certain asthma triggers will initiate an attack. When experiencing an attack, the dog will experience a persistent wheezing cough. It will look and sound as though he is gasping for air, unable to catch his breath. Although each dog may have a different trigger, common triggers include tobacco smoke, dust, pollen, certain foods, preservatives, chemicals, stress and cold air. A few serious medical problems may also cause asthma in dogs, including bacterial infections, viral infections, worms and cancer.

    Remove Irritants

    • If you are able to locate the trigger, attempt to remove it from the dog's environment. If you have begun using a new household cleaner or garden spray, try avoiding it for a few weeks and see if the dog's asthma attacks subside. Similarly, if you have given your dog a new type of food, try switching back to the old brand and see if the symptoms relax. Try keeping your dog away from cigarette smoke and excessive amounts of dust. During cold weather, keep him inside the heated home if possible.

    Relieve Symptoms

    • Speak with a veterinarian regarding the attacks. The veterinarian will likely prescribe an antihistamine, bronchodilator, steroid, or a combination of these drugs to relieve symptoms. The antihistamines will dry up excess mucus in the lungs and bronchi. The bronchodilators aim to relax the swelling of the bronchi. The steroids then control inflammation of the lungs. Dogs will either take these medicines orally or through inhalation. Your veterinarian will show you the proper way to give an inhalation medicine, if necessary.

Additionally, dogs with asthma tend to be more comfortable in areas that are not intensely dry. If possible, use a humidifier in the room where the dog sleeps. It is also essential to keep your dog at a healthy weight. Asthma happens most commonly among overweight dogs. Ensure your dog has a healthy diet and regular exercise routine to lessen the possibility of an attack.
