Dogs, like people, can suffer from a variety of brain disorders that can cause seizures. Traditionally, it has been thought that once a dog was actually in the process of having a seizure, the owner's only option was to wait it out and prevent the dog from doing itself any more harm than necessary. (For example, you would move the dog away from a pool or open fire). However, new studies indicate that you may be able to abbreviate or even halt the seizure using a new method involving cool water and ice.
Things You'll Need
- Towel
- Ziploc bags
- Crushed ice
Instructions
Prepare your ice packs. Keep two ice packs in the freezer for emergencies. The pack is going to go on the middle and lower parts of your dog's back. You should use the right size zip lock bag to cover the entire middle and lower back area. Fill the zip lock bags with crushed ice, but be sure to leave enough room for them to flex. Store them in your freezer in case they are needed.
Protect the animal and yourself. The most important part of caring for your dog during a seizure is avoiding unnecessary injuries. Do not get near the mouth, since you can easily get bitten, and remove other animals from the area, since they may actually attack your struggling pet.
Hold the ice pack firmly on your dog's lower back. This will be the area just above your dog's "waist" and tail. The pack should drape over the middle and lower back area. The sooner you can apply the ice, the better. Hold the ice there until the seizure stops, or until you can get the dog to a veterinarian for treatment.
