Home Remedy for Drying Ears

Ear infections are one of the most common problems for dogs. Many pet owners find themselves constantly going back and forth to the veterinarian's office to deal with ear infections. There are many at-home remedies that you can use to help keep your pet's ears dry and healthy, which can save you not only time, but money, too.

  1. Provide Air Flow

    • Dogs with floppy ears, such as Cocker spaniels and basset hounds, are most prone to getting ear infections. That is because the ear covers the opening to the ear canal, blocking air from getting in to help keep the canal dry.

If your pet doesn't mind being handled this way, try to fold its ears over its head so that the inside of the ear is exposed. That should help air to get in. If you can't fold them, try using a soft, loose hair tie, such as a scrunchie, to tie the ears together over the dog's head. Make sure that the tie is loose and it is not cutting off circulation to the ears. If those techniques fail, you can simply hold your dog's ears up for as long as it will allow it.

    A Simple Solution

    • Using a solution of equal parts white vinegar and isopropyl alcohol may be helpful for keeping your pet's ear's dry. The alcohol will help dry any moisture that is in the ear, while the vinegar will destroy bacteria and yeast. A good time to use the solution is after your pet has swam or been bathed. It is also helpful to use it anytime you think your dog may be getting an ear infection.

    The Power of Powder

    • Another effective home remedy for drying your dog's ears is using a combination of four ounces each of boric acid and zinc oxide powders, along with a half ounce of Idoform powder. The boric acid and zinc oxide powders help to keep the ear canal dry, while the Idoform can eliminate fungus and bacteria. Place a pinch of this mixture once a month in your dog's ears to help keep them dry.
