Indigestion is one of the most common ailments in dogs. It can be caused by a number of things, ranging from dietary upset and viral illness to consumption of a foreign body or substance. If you suspect your dog has a serious problem or ingested something harmful, it is always best to consult your veterinarian before treating the dog at home. If you are sure your dog has a simple case of indigestion, there are many home remedies that you can use.

Withhold Food
-
If your dog has an upset stomach and vomits or has diarrhea, withhold food until these problems subside. This will give your dog an adequate amount of time to recover before he eats more. During this time, offer him ice cubes or a small amount of vegetable broth so he stays hydrated.
Herbs For Dog Indigestion
-
Many herbs are used as an indigestion remedy for dogs. For instance, chamomile tea works well to calm the stomach, alleviate nausea and reduce internal inflammation. It can be given when you withhold food. Give a dog equal parts of water and steeped chamomile tea.
Golden seal is another herbal remedy that works well for dog indigestion. The antibacterial, anti-parasitic and anti-viral properties of golden seal are particularly useful if you suspect your dog's indigestion is caused by an infection or bug. Make a tea using 1/2 tsp. of golden seal and about 2 cups of water. Let the tea cool, strain the golden seal and mix the tea with 1 cup of water. You can give your dog this remedy up to three times daily.
You also can make a peppermint or ginger tea for a dog with indigestion. These are both common remedies that are used for humans with indigestion or upset stomach, too, and so they are in many homes. Make tea of either peppermint or ginger using 1/2 tsp. of the herb and about 2 cups of water. Strain the herb and then dilute the tea with 1 cup of water before giving it to your dog. As with golden seal tea, this can be served up to three times daily.
Foods to Prevent Dog Indigestion
-
There are many things you can feed your dog to reduce the amount of indigestion he experiences. If you change your dog's food, however, make sure that you do so gradually so you do not upset his stomach. If your dog has a sensitive stomach, use food that is labeled low residue or limited ingredient. The less the dog has to digest, the better. Also avoid common indigestion-trigger foods such as corn, soy and wheat.
