Information on Feeding Cat Food to Dogs

Veterinarians and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals do not recommend feeding cat food to dogs. Dogs and cats have different nutritional needs. A diet made entirely of cat food leads to health issues and nutrient deficiencies in dogs.

  1. Features

    • Common cat food works best with a cat's metabolism. The food contains higher amounts of proteins and fats than found in common dog foods.

    Nutrition

    • Dogs cannot gain sufficient nutrition from a diet of cat food. Dogs are omnivores, and require both meat and plant materials in food. Cats are carnivorous and cat food contains no plant nutrients.

    Warning

    • Dogs who eat only cat food suffer from digestive problems, such as vomiting and diarrhea. The higher fat content in cat food leads to obesity in dogs. The occasional cat food snack will not harm a dog but may cause diarrhea.

    Solutions

    • Dogs will eat cat food if they can access it. Storing food separately and feeding your dog and cat in different rooms will prevent a dog from stealing cat food

    Recommendations

    • The ASPCA recommends feeding dogs a dog food suited to age and lifestyle. Puppies and older dogs have different nutritional needs. Local pet supply stores feature dog foods designed for these differing needs.
